Limited Edition

A limited edition is a pre-determined amount of prints to be created and released. The issue number is usually decided prior to the run by either the artist or publisher. The prints created in the run are normally signed and numbered ( s/n ) by the originating artist. Since there is a known limited availability, the dollar value of a limited edition print is most often higher than open print runs.

Giclée Print

The term Giclée (pronounced as Zhee-Clay) is a French term for "fine spray". It is now used to describe a precision fine art ink jet printing process. No printing film or plates are involved in this process. Two media choices are favored, canvas or fine art paper. Giclée printing was first introduced as a prepress proofing system for high quality art books in the late 1980s. In more recent years, artist's found that their original paintings could be scanned directly into a computer and the information used to control the minuscule ink jets on a high quality digital printer. These jets spray literally millions of water-based ink droplets per second onto either canvas or fine art paper that is spinning on a drum. The process produces thousands of shades of rich color creating the velvet look and fine texture of the original work.

Offset Lithographic Print

Also known as Offset Photomechanical Reproduction, Lithography was often used to describe many different types of printing techniques using chemical interactions of the components. In modern days the original image is scanned or photographed and placed into a computer to produce color separations for each color used in the printing process. The separations are transferred to plates with each plate representing the values, in micro-dot patterns, of of the four process colors ( cyan, yellow, magenta and black ). The printing process most commonly used is called "offset". Based in part on the idea that the print image is offset from the drum or printing plate onto the paper or canvas by the chemical actions and effect of the lithograph components ( plate preparations, special inks, and distilled water ).
